I guess if I have a SCA journal I should really post to it at least after attending events. So here are my thoughts on the two recent events I've attended.
Winter Solstice (yea, I should have written about this back in December) This was a nice little event. It was really enjoyable to be at an event where I wasn't in charge of anything. It was also nice that I didn't feel like I had to go charging around the event all day to accomplish everything I was interested in. A nice backgammon lesson and tournament were arranged, which had me cursing my forgetfulness in not bringing my go board and stones. After the event, dinner at a nice Thai restaurant with Louise, Wolfram, and Susanna and her family was very enjoyable.
12th Night The first time I've had a chance to attend this event, it was great that it was in Charlotte. We got here bright and early to help with setup (Miriel and I were in charge of keeping the restrooms cleaned and stocked) and for me to help with an early morning shift at Troll. This time I remembered to bring my go board and stones, but after working at troll for an hour most of the tables in the main hall had been occupied by various people's belongings. Morning court was difficult to understand from the edges of the room due to the poor acoustics.
Early in the afternoon (after running offsite to fetch lunch), I finally gave up on trying to find a space in the main hall and set up my go board in the back of Miriel's merchant area. I managed to attract interest in playing from several new players, as well as some who had played before. One of the experienced players even hung around and taught another newbie while I was away helping set up the main hall for feast. Evening court was also difficult to understand due to the acoustics, although it was nice seeing Kisaiya getting her Pelican and Sir Christian getting his White Scarf.
Feast was excellent. I liked almost everything that was brought out, some of the sauces were just excellent. Sitting near the back with the event staff only had one drawback, when court was held again at feast I was again unable to hear most of what went on. I was glad to hear of Graciela's Pearl and Val's Laural, but I was unable to see or hear anything other than the herald's final announcements of the awards granted. |

| | surprised | ] | War of the Wings this weekend was a really fun event. I understand the final attendance was about 650 people, outstripping almost everyone's attendance expectations. This entry will be a little backwards, but since firehauke has already called me out on it, I might as well get my award out of the way. Miriel had been subtly bugging me to stay for and attend closing court (which I thought odd, since I usually like attending court). During their baronial court, Marc and Alianor summoned me into court. I was surprised, as I thought that being given another Flame of the Phoenix at SSBB had pretty much exhausted my short-term award possibilities (at least on the baronial level). So I was completely stunned to be awarded the Order of the Yeoman of the Sacred Stone. I was doubly honored when Alianor told me that the medallion used to be Maeve's.
As for the rest of the event, we got up there about 8:45 on Saturday. After I deposited our gear under the A&S area, I headed off to say hello to people and to see how they were doing with the archery range. I spent most of my day being a spectator, although I did shoot in archery competition for the war point. I also helped waterbear during the heavy castle battle (being a waterbearer is also a great excuse to watch the fighting). I also spent some time talking about sewing with Mistress Jeanmaire, I will probably be spending some early Thursday afternoons at her house learning more advanced sewing techniques. |

This is my SCA Livejournal. I've seperated it out from my other LJ at stormcrow42 in the hope that I'll feel less silly posting SCAdian developments here. |
